In New Jersey’s hotly contested primary race for U.S. Senate, first lady Tammy Murphy had a big win Monday night at the Bergen County Democratic Convention. That victory gave her a ballot position on the coveted county line in the June primary.
More than 1,100 delegates cast votes, with 64% voting for Murphy and a little over a third for her principal rival, U.S. Rep Andy Kim (D-3rd). It’s Murphy’s first win in a traditional convention.
“This is historic. In the three decades that I have been around and been involved in politics, I have never ever seen 1,157 delegates,” said Paul Juliano, the Democratic county party chairman.
“Right from the outset, the chairman immediately came in and endorsed the first lady within 48 hours of her announcing a race, never returned my phone calls until like four days ago, not giving me the same opportunities,” said Kim. “We know he’s hosted multiple events for her. So, no, it was never a fair fight, but I wanted to come and show that, hey, I’m not scared of the machine and over 400 people also said that they’re not scared of the machine.”
