The leader of the state’s Democratic Party, LeRoy Jones, has removed former Senate President Steve Sweeney from the commission that is redrawing New Jersey’s legislative districts. Jones said he made the decision after careful consideration and in concert with party leaders across the state. Sweeney is being replaced by Laura Matos, who leads the Pinelands Commission and will be the only Latina on the redistricting panel.

Sweeney told NJ Advance Media the decision to remove him is not legal and his lawyers are reviewing whether to challenge it in court.
