The New Jersey Tutoring Corps is providing tutoring at 23 locations around the state this summer. Launched in 2021 to address pandemic-related learning loss, it provides tutoring for pre-K to 5th grade students. According to one assessment, the percent of students in the program performing at grade level in math improved from 16% to 40% and in literacy from 23% to 40%. At the Trenton Boys and Girls Club, more than 100 students are participating in the third year of summer tutoring.

Ashley Bencan, Chief Operating Officer of New Jersey Teaching Corps, said, “All of our scholars take a diagnostic assessment. What that tells us is … here you are in your grade-level standards. A fourth-grade scholar is supposed to know these 20 things. We zero in on that lesson or need and they create fun and engaging activities to make it stick.”

“This is an important opportunity for students to build and/or maintain skills that they worked on through the school year,” said high school teacher Maria Tomasetti, a certified tutor. “We are building the kids’ confidence in their ability to learn, and we want them to take ownership of their learning and feel enthusiastic about learning.”
