Newark is just one of the 10 cities nationwide where AileyCamp, which is celebrating its 35th anniversary, is held. Excellence is the theme of this year’s camp, which was founded in 1989 in Missouri by world-renowned dancer and choreographer Alvin Ailey.
Ninety-five students attended this summer’s camp in Newark, at Arts High School. Sherece Hill is co-director of the Newark camp which offers a variety of lessons ranging from visual arts to percussion and dance. The six-week camp is free of charge to students ages 11-14 through funding from the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, Newark Public Schools and Prudential.
Students are also provided with free attire and free breakfast and lunch. The program also encourages personal development for students.
