Backups caused by tractor trailers waiting to enter Port Newark and Elizabeth sometimes stretch for miles. That could ease with help from a $44 million federal Department of Transportation grant, part of a project to reconfigure the port’s main access route.
The Corbin Street corridor project could cut 700,000 hours of travel time per year for truck traffic and slash accident rates by 40% at Corbin’s hairpin exit ramp. It would also reduce diesel emissions near Newark neighborhoods, where kids suffer four times the national asthma rate.
