Nurses and technicians at Saint Michael’s Medical Center in Newark are now in their fourth week on strike. They say they’re not being treated fairly and want to be paid better wages and benefits. Representatives for the hospital maintain their contract offer was fair but say they are willing to continue negotiations.

“We are hoping for a good health care insurance, the best plan they can come up with, not just something they want to throw at us, the best ones. We are also hoping to get a pay increase … and we also hope to increase our pension,” said Elfrieda Johnson, a staff nurse at the hospital.

Union representatives say that nurses and technicians are being paid much more and getting better benefits at other area hospitals.
