President Donald Trump has tapped state Sen. Doug Steinhardt (R-Warren) to serve as the next U.S. Attorney for New Jersey. The 56-year-old former mayor from Warren County served as chairman of the state Republican Party during President Trump’s 2020 reelection campaign.

“Doug has always been a relentless fighter in his commitment to justice and the principles that guide our nation and state,” said fellow Sen. Mike Testa (R-Cumberland). “I applaud President Trump for recognizing Doug’s exceptional qualities and selecting someone who will undoubtedly serve the people of New Jersey with honor and integrity.”

Steinhardt briefly sought the GOP nomination for governor in 2021 as a pro-Trump candidate. He will serve in an acting capacity, replacing Vikas Khanna who became acting U.S. Attorney earlier this month following Phillip Sellinger’s resignation.

“While our politics are different, he represents civility and decency,” said state Sen. Vin Gopal (D-Monmouth).

In a statement, the New Jersey Republican Party congratulated the nomination, calling Steinhardt a “steadfast leader and advocate for New Jersey throughout his distinguished career. … a dedicated public servant who puts his community first.”

The nomination to be the state’s top law enforcement official at the federal level now needs U.S. Senate confirmation, including the backing of New Jersey’s two Democratic U.S. Sens. Cory Booker and Andy Kim.
