The federal government continues lurching towards a default on the national debt after a White House meeting on Tuesday between President Joe Biden and top congressional leaders ended without a deal. The two parties remain far apart on the issue, with Republicans demanding deep spending cuts to federal programs in exchange for lifting the debt ceiling and Democrats calling for the debt ceiling to be lifted with no strings attached. If that ceiling isn’t lifted, the federal government could run out of money to pay its bills as soon as June 1, officials have warned.
In Trenton, lawmakers are trying to put together New Jersey’s next budget, and uncertainty about what will happen in Washington is trickling down to the state level.
