A new vaccine requirement in Trenton is splitting lawmakers. Assembly Republicans plan to challenge a new rule banning legislators from entering the State House if they don’t have proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test. And now they’re debating whether they’ll take action.
Assemblyman Brian Bergen, of Denville, says he won’t comply with the policy, indicating, “We’re making different classes of people — the vaccinated and the unvaccinated — It’s not OK.” But Assemblyman John DeMaio says the vast majority of his caucus is vaccinated and that his concern is with access for members of the public. He suggested that the new rules for the Legislature could be a precursor to vaccine mandates for all New Jersey residents, something GOP lawmakers also oppose.
