A number of small businesses hoping to sell recreational marijuana in New Jersey are expressing concerns about getting license approval. That’s because, according to the state’s cannabis legislation, towns opting into the adult-use market are allowed to impose their own criteria, called “home rule.” This means that even if a state license is approved by the Cannabis Regulatory Commission, the local municipality can still deny it. Businesses that have been approved are also finding issues getting funding to secure a property since cannabis is still illegal at the federal level.
