The second day of the Jan. 6 House committee hearings took place Monday, focusing on the “big lie” — the allegation that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from President Trump. A key witness was supposed to be former Trump campaign manager Bill Stepien, who, before working for Trump, was former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s campaign manager. Stepien wasn’t able to testify in person Monday because his wife went into labor. Instead, his video deposition was shown, where he clearly stated he did not support the president’s claims on election night that there was widespread election fraud.
The hearing Monday documented testimony from several in Trump’s inner circle who also denounced the “big lie” that the election was somehow stolen, a claim that was chanted by the rioters who stormed the Capitol building on Jan. 6, 2021. Rep. Albio Sires (D-8th), was on the chamber floor that day as the mob attacked. Sires gives his perspective on the events of that day and the committee hearings. “I still believe that he [Trump] should go to jail for what he did and I think that they’re doing a good job of making the argument that he should be going to jail,” Sires said of the hearings.
