Gov.-elect Mikie Sherrill has picked long-time prosecutor Jennifer Davenport to be New Jersey’s next attorney general.
Davenport previously worked alongside Sherrill in the U.S. attorney’s office, as well as for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. She also worked in the private sector, handling criminal and civil litigation, most recently at energy utility PSEG.
Sherrill said Davenport is a committed public servant with a strong record of fighting for the people in the state. She said Davenport will hold companies accountable, like the energy grid operator PJM, as well as tech companies that create algorithms that Sherrill says are designed to be addicting to children.
On the campaign trail, Sherrill also promised to select an AG who would take on the Trump administration’s policies that she says hurt New Jersey residents.
Davenport is currently deputy general counsel at PSEG, and she might be affected by Sherrill’s plans for an electricity rate freeze. Davenport said she is prepared to recuse herself from any case with a conflict or appearance of a conflict of interest.
Davenport’s appointment still has to be confirmed by the state Senate.
