A number of issues will be influencing voters as they head to the polls for midterm elections this fall, not least of which is abortion rights and the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade. Democrats expect the topic could provide a boost in votes from women and abortion rights supporters. Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-11th) hosted a panel with Planned Parenthood in Montclair Monday on the topic.
“Lest we all think that here in New Jersey we are fine, right? ‘Oh, here in New Jersey we have protections.’ I always remind people, New Jersey under Chris Christie was the first state in the nation to defund Planned Parenthood. So without these minimal baseline protections of Roe, we are simply at the mercy of the ballot box,” said Sherrill.
“I voted for the Women’s Health Protection Act, which codifies Roe. We’re working to get more support in the Senate. And then we’ve also passed legislation in the House to extend legal protections to Americans who utilize constitutional freedoms to travel to other states to seek health care,” Sherrill said.
