South Jersey transit riders who depend on the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority — SEPTA — saw major disruptions to their commutes Monday, as the first phase of cuts went into effect for the transit agency’s rail and bus lines.
The initial round of service cuts focused on service within Philadelphia, where 32 bus routes will be eliminated and 16 routes shortened. Trolleys and subways will also offer fewer rides.
Regional rail cuts are set to begin on Sept. 2, with steep service reductions on the lines serving Trenton and West Trenton. SEPTA fares are also scheduled to increase at the start of September.
SEPTA has a $213 million operating budget hole and no stable funding source. Pennsylvania’s legislature has been deadlocked in tense budget negotiations for months over transit funding.
