Camden is considered one of the 134 food deserts in New Jersey with just one supermarket, a Pathmark, in the city of nearly 80,000 residents. While there are many food bodegas, those establishments offer mainly cheap, unhealthy food. To help residents get access to healthier options, there are 116 community gardens in Camden and lawmakers are trying to bring mobile vehicles carrying fresh produce to the city. An additional grocery store is coming to Camden, though the name has not yet been released. NJToday’s Lauren Wanko files this report from Camden.

Camden’s one supermarket is a bus ride away for many residents, making it an inconvenient trip. Officials have said it’s imperative that the city have a second grocery store for residents, many of whom spend 40 percent of their annual incomes on food. The second supermarket is part of a larger construction project, which includes additional housing and office space. Work is scheduled to begin by the middle of 2012.
