One year after Gov. Phil Murphy signed legislation legalizing recreational marijuana use for adults in New Jersey, businesses looking to enter the market are still waiting to find out when they can begin selling the drug. Alternative treatment centers were supposed to be able to start selling recreational marijuana on Feb. 22, six months after the Cannabis Regulatory Commission adopted its rules and regulations for the adult-use market.
Under the law, alternative treatment centers must prove they have enough supply for medical marijuana patients as well as show they can expand their business in the adult-use market without any interruption in supply to patients. But, according to the commission, it has received many incomplete applications. Some treatment centers say their supply is more than sufficient and they would like more clarification from regulators about what’s missing. The application period for retail licenses is set to open on March 15 but some businesses believe that process too could be delayed.
