The Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital nurses’ strike now enters its fifth month, with the strike costing big money for both sides of the dispute. Nearly 1,700 nurses walked off the job in the beginning of August and have been without pay or health benefits. On the management side, the hospital said it has spent more than $120 million on replacing nurses to keep the facility operating. The nurses’ union submitted its latest contract proposal last week, and a spokesperson said that the proposal is similar to what the group has asked for since the strike began. Staffing levels and the removal of penalties for nurses who call out sick have been the top priorities for the union. The union’s spokesperson said there’s no deadline for the hospital to respond.
