Rutgers students make their voices heard on Israel divestiture

Protest at Rutgers' Board of Governors meeting follows student vote

Rutgers students continued on Thursday to demand New Jersey’s largest state university divest from Israeli companies and from its partner Tel Aviv University, this time making their voices heard during a Board of Governors meeting in Camden.

John Bernstein, a student at Rutgers, was one of those who spoke at the meeting marked by frequent interruptions. “In normalizing relationships with TAU, you have all created an environment in which the violence against Palestinian and Muslim students abroad has reproduced itself on campus,” he said.

Lu Biltucci, a graduate student at Rutgers University, added: “We don’t need another shiny building. We need investments in our students. We do not need investments in state of Israel. We need to divest.”

The protest followed a vote of the student bodies of all three Rutgers campuses that was heavily in favor of divestment. In its first meeting since then, the Board in its open session did not address the vote or the issue of divestment at all. It also met in closed session for an hour-and-a-half.

Rutgers is among college campuses nationwide that have become an epicenter for debate and protest over the war in Gaza. This week, Columbia University’s president testified before Congress over that school’s handling of pro-Palestine student organizing on campus, as well as charges of antisemitism among faculty.
