In one night, Rutgers basketball nearly doubled its output of NBA first-round picks.
Dylan Harper was picked second overall in the NBA Draft by the San Antonio Spurs, and Ace Bailey was picked fifth overall by the Utah Jazz. They became the fourth and fifth Scarlet Knights ever to be selected in the first round of the NBA Draft, as well as Rutgers’ first first-rounders since Quincy Douby was picked 19th overall in 2006.
“Just seeing your name on an NBA jersey for the first time is probably one of the best feelings, besides getting your name called,” said Harper during his introductory news conference Saturday. “My biggest goal is just getting better every day and just taking it day by day, step by step, and just learning from everyone I can.”
Harper joins a talented young core in San Antonio that features the last two winners of the NBA Rookie of the Year award.
Bailey was selected by Utah after an unconventional draft process that saw him turn down pre-draft workout requests from multiple teams. After reports popped up that Bailey did not want to be picked by the Jazz, he took Sunday’s introductory news conference to refute them and defend his preparations.
“I trust my work, I mean, countless hours in the gym,” he said. “Everybody made mistakes, God didn’t put us here to be perfect. So just trust myself and just trust my process.”
Harper, a native of Franklin Lakes, attended Don Bosco Prep and starred for the Ironmen basketball team.
