Trenton city leaders are still sorting out the chaos from municipal elections held in November. A Mercer County assignment judge on Sunday ruled in favor of keeping a previously scheduled runoff election for Dec. 13 to choose North and South city ward council seats and selecting Jan. 24 to hold the runoff election for the capital city’s at-large seat.
The decision comes after weeks of uncertainty for voters and candidates, when Dominion voting machines malfunctioned on Election Day. This forced the county to resort to paper ballots, which allowed everyone to vote but delayed the results from being released. The chaos didn’t end there. Candidates filed a lawsuit contending the city clerk’s office wasn’t using the right formula to determine the outcome of the original election, where nine candidates were vying for three ward seats. Another hearing is due to be held Dec. 6 to clarify logistical issues now that the runoff dates are set.
