The reopening of two westbound lanes on Route I-80 in Wharton is being delayed.
The lanes were expected to reopen by May 4, but the state Department of Transportation said because of complications in repairs to damage caused by sinkholes, the two lanes will not reopen until the end of May.
All lanes are still on schedule to be open by June 25, according to the DOT.
The section of the highway near Wharton in Morris County has been shut down for months after extensive voids were uncovered beneath the roadway, wreaking havoc on the local community and creating a traffic nightmare for commuters.
Crews will be working around the clock until the repairs are done and the roadway is stabilized, DOT says. The department has created an I-80 project web page to keep the public informed about the progress of repairs. The page also has information about detours, alternative routes and other options to minimize traffic congestion.
