Mental health was center stage Thursday at the annual conference of the New Jersey Reentry Corporation, which focused on combat trauma, military sexual trauma and brain injury among veterans. Some 8% of people incarcerated in New Jersey are veterans, many of whom served in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Former Gov. Jim McGreevey of NJRC said the hope is that the NJRC will expand, providing services for vets where the Veterans Affairs department is missing out. Speakers at the conference included U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-11th) and former University Hospital Newark president and CEO Dr. Shereef Elnahal, who is now undersecretary for health at the VA.
