It’s another record-breaking Memorial Day weekend for travel at Newark Liberty International Airport and all Port Authority airports, with 2.2 million passengers expected.
Many travelers — feeling the economic squeeze — planned shorter stays or cheaper hotels. The Vinson family lives in New York City but chose to fly out of Newark to take advantage of lower fares.
“It’s definitely a lot more expensive than it used to be,” said Bina Lauoroe from Maplewood. “So it makes it a little harder to travel. But that’s why I’m going to take advantage. I’m flying out for a wedding — so I’m going to make a trip out of it cause flights ain’t cheap no more.”
The Port Authority recommended travelers arrive early to airports, pre-book parking and stay patient. The TSA expects some 3 million passengers nationwide to file through checkpoints on Friday alone.
More people are driving than flying this weekend.
AAA is expecting more than 1 million New Jersey residents to travel for the Memorial Day holiday, said Tracy Noble of AAA Mid-Atlantic. “That is an increase of 4% compared to last year. And it’s actually the highest number of travelers since 2005,”said Noble.
