A new report looks at how police in New Jersey respond to issues like substance abuse and mental health crises. It calls into question whether police interventions keep citizens safer or put some at greater risk, and it envisions alternatives to traditional policing and how some models are working here in New Jersey.
The newly released report, from the left-leaning think tank New Jersey Policy Perspective, is called “To Protect and Serve: Investing in Public Safety Beyond Policing.” It says that models of public safety that center around police in Jersey have negative consequences.
