Newark native rapper, actress and philanthropist Queen Latifah helped break ground on a new multi-family housing development in Newark, a plan she’s been working on for more than a decade. The project would transform properties on the corner of Springfield Avenue and South 17th street into mixed-use space to revitalize and beautify the neighborhood.
The deal is 16 units will be set aside as affordable housing and the rest are being set at market-rate rent starting at $1,800 a month. Eventually there will be 76 units as well as ground-floor space for nonprofits.
