Persistent hot and dry weather is giving crews a real fight in battling a massive, fatal wildfire burning on the New Jersey-New York border. The Jennings Creek wildfire remains roughly 4,400 acres large — about 2,300 acres on the Jersey side and another 2,100 in New York.
New Jersey Forest Fire Service officials said Wednesday the blaze is now about 30% contained, and noted fire crews made good progress despite Tuesday’s red-flag weather.
Two homes in West Milford are still threatened, and about 50 New Jersey firefighters remain on the fire line. Over the weekend an 18-year-old volunteer forest ranger in New York was killed while working on the fire, and in New Jersey two firefighters have been reported injured in recent days. No additional injuries were reported Wednesday.
