The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has proposed new guidelines for prescribing opioids for pain treatment that would eliminate dosage caps on treatment. If authorized, the changes would enable some patients to receive more than 90 morphine milligram equivalent-size doses daily to treat their pain. But experts in pain medicine worry that removing limits could lead to over-prescribing of opioids, hurting patients and aggravating the already raging overdose epidemic.
Dr. Lewis Nelson, director of the Division of Medical Toxicology at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, discusses how the changes could impact patients.
