A Monmouth University poll out Tuesday suggests positive news for President-elect Donald Trump. While mostly still split along party lines, 53% of respondents in the national poll expressed optimism for Trump’s policies, up slightly over the 50% just before he took office for the first time in 2017.

According to the poll, when looking back at the job Trump did in his first term, respondents appeared to remember that time more fondly than polls at the time showed.

“When we asked the national audience — Americans across the country — what do you think about the job he did the first time, 50% of them approve of the job he did the first time,” said Patrick Murray, director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute. “He never got near 50% approval rating when he was actually in office. He topped out at the mid 40s and was mostly in the low 40s. This is the first time in Monmouth polling where we asked a question about Donald Trump’s job performance, whether when he was in office or out of office, where he’s ever hit that 50% mark.”

Some 97% of Republicans expressed optimism for the next four years compared to 10% of Democrats.
