Middle school and high schools in New Jersey should notify parents if their child wants to be identified as a different gender than is on their school registration, the majority of New Jersey residents believe, according to a new poll. The Monmouth University Poll, results of which were released Tuesday, surveyed residents for their views on a range of gender- and school-related issues, including the controversial issue of parental notification.
State Attorney General Matthew Platkin has sued three school districts over parental notification policies he says violate state anti-discrimination laws.
The poll shows most residents believe that in sports competitions, transgender students should compete against people of the same biological sex. The poll also shows a range of opinions toward teaching about gender identity, with approval for high-school students and more disapproval for younger students.
