In his State of the State address earlier this month, Gov. Phil Murphy laid out plans to boost New Jersey’s status as a so-called abortion safe haven, calling on lawmakers to pass a bill that will end out-of-pocket costs for the procedure.

New Jersey has required health insurance to cover abortion services, one of 10 states that do so. But New Jersey is the only state among that group that doesn’t bar the patient from having to pick up the out-of-pocket costs.

Dr. Kristyn Brandi, an abortion provider in the state, said the costs are significant.

“People’s healthcare shouldn’t be determined by whether or not they can pay out of pocket,” she said. “People should have access to the care that they need for their health, for their lives, for their families. And regardless of why they need care or what kind of care they need, being able to cover it is equivalent to being able to access it.”

Marie Tasy, executive director of New Jersey Right to Life, said there would be a financial impact: “It will cause premiums to go up for employers and employees. Also, New Jersey is welcoming people from other states, so there’s a big question on whether they’ll be paying for abortions from people from out of state as well.”
