The Paterson school district is under fire from federal civil rights investigators after they noted a failure to protect students from sexual harassment and assault.

A review announced on Monday by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights cited multiple instances where district employees learned of sexual harassment allegations between students and staff but never reported them as required by the law for five years starting in 2017.

The school is the third largest district in the state and home to nearly 25,000 students across almost 50 schools.

The damning report also found school officials did not document internal investigations into the complaints and failed to offer students supportive measures or let them know they were available. The report also detailed instances of student-on-student assault and harassment that went unchecked.

As a result, the Paterson school district agreed to follow a 15-page compliance agreement, which includes more staff training and mandated record keeping and reporting. If the district doesn’t comply, it could face more serious charges from the Department of Justice.
