New Jersey’s first offshore wind project is a big step closer to becoming reality. Ocean Wind 1, which is being built by the Danish energy company Ørsted, just cleared its environmental analysis by federal regulators. Final approval for the project is now expected this summer, with construction slated to start next year. The project involves the installation of up to 98 wind turbines and up to three offshore substations.
Meanwhile, a second offshore wind project, called Atlantic Shores, is also making progress after receiving its draft Environmental Impact Statement. Both developments are seen as key pieces to transitioning New Jersey to renewable energy, a goal of both Gov. Phil Murphy and the Biden administration.
