Residents of Ocean Grove are marking the 150th anniversary of the seaside community and celebrating its history.
The Methodist ministers who founded the town held their first camp meeting in a tent in what has come to be known as Founder’s Park.
Ocean Grove’s camp meetings soon drew visitors from all over the country, and the town became a destination for both religion and recreation.
At one point, there were about 900 tents within the small community. Eventually, picturesque Victorian homes took their place, although there are still 114 tents in Ocean Grove.
In Founder’s Park, a fountain dating back to 1907 fell into disrepair in the 1970s and hasn’t operated for decades. At one time, there were 10 fountains in Ocean Grove, but the fountain in the park is the last one remaining.
The Historical Society of Ocean Grove launched a Fill the Fountain campaign to raise $106,000 to restore the fountain and the surrounding grounds. Over about two years, thousands of dollars poured in and they ultimately reached their goal.
Now, the fountain will flow from mid-spring through mid-fall.
