Fees from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s congestion pricing plan could range from $9 to as high as $23 during rush hour. Under the plan, motorists who enter Manhattan south of 60th Street will be required to pay a toll, with tolls for commercial vehicles and trucks ranging from $12 to $82.

The transportation authority Wednesday morning released an in-depth study required by the federal government looking at outcomes of seven different tolling scenarios — which found that car traffic could be reduced by as much as 20% and truck traffic could drop anywhere from 21% to 81%, depending on the pricing scheme.

According to the MTA, it needs the money that would be generated by congestion pricing for transit improvements while it struggles to regain mass-transit ridership, which is still 40% below pre-pandemic levels. Gov. Phil Murphy and other New Jersey officials are vowing to fight the extra toll that would hit New Jersey commuters twice as hard when combined with the cost to get through bridges and tunnels.
