For many people leaving prison, challenges like finding a job, accessing housing, health care, and even getting a Social Security card can be overwhelming. That’s where the New Jersey Reentry Corporation comes in. Run by former New Jersey Gov. Jim McGreevey, the nonprofit announced this week that it’s expanding into Union County.

Keynote speaker Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver got emotional when discussing the importance of second chances, sharing the story of one young man’s journey. “He got so frustrated trying to get a job, a place to live … People look at you like you’re some anomaly, that you’re not a human being,” said Oliver.

Reentry Corporation clients say the variety of resources is key to their success, but that nothing is as important as the compassion they’re shown there.

“It helped me get my Social Security, it helped me get my birth certificate, it helped me get a job. This program helps you, they care about you, they show you love,” said Efrain Maisonet.
