Voters in the 27th Legislative District may be scratching their heads at the shuffling and reshuffling in the Democrats’ lineup for the fall election.

Long-time Sen. Richard Codey (D-Essex) announced mid-August he would step down weeks after defeating Sen. Nia Gill in the primary election. This was followed by an announcement from Alixon Collazos-Gill, who was elected in the June primary as an Assembly candidate for the Democrats, that she was stepping aside to be replaced on the ticket by her husband, Essex County Commissioner Brendan Gill. Then on Thursday night, Collazos-Gill said she’s back in Assembly race and her husband is bowing out.

In an interview with NJ Spotlight News, LeRoy Jones, the chairman of the New Jersey Democratic State Committee, dismissed criticism of the changes. “Let’s dispel the notion of backroom politics because that is not the case here,” Jones said.
