On Tuesday, the state announced a new rule that will require all new cars sold in New Jersey to be electric by 2035, igniting both celebration and debate.
The new policy comes as part of the Murphy administration’s campaign to improve air quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, which has been shown to contribute to climate change. Environmentalists haled the move, while industry groups warned state infrastructure isn’t ready and the order will cause a spike in the cost for buyers.
“This is bad public policy being forced on an industry and frankly it’s gonna start to show in the marketplace as soon as next year,” said Jim Appleton, the president of NJ Coalition of Automotive Retailers.
