For the first time since September, the state is increasing indoor capacity — from 25% to 35% at restaurants, bars, salons, gyms and casinos, among other businesses. The new limit will also apply to performance venues, houses of worship and funerals, with a cap of 150 people.

The new rule takes effect Friday morning, lifting the 10 p.m. indoor dining curfew just in time for Super Bowl weekend. That is, unless local leaders rule otherwise. Residents still cannot gather at the bar out of concern over the danger of close and prolonged proximity to other people.

Gov. Phil Murphy cited a decline in hospitalizations and a lower rate of transmission of the coronavirus as the main reasons behind the decision.
