With eight days to go, early in-person voting in the Garden State kicked off on Saturday, and the state is already setting records.

A whopping 858,000 voters overall have already cast their ballots, with nearly 611,000 cast by mail and the remaining 247,000 votes cast this weekend at early in-person polling locations.

On the first day of early voting, actually, more voters showed up to the polls than all early in-person voters in the 2023 election. Gov. Phil Murphy and first lady Tammy Murphy were among those voting early this weekend.

Meanwhile, GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump on Sunday held a rally at Madison Square Garden, where about a dozen speakers took to the podium with a host of slurs made against Latinos, Democrats and Vice President Kamala Harris. Comedian Tony Hinchcliffe called Puerto Rico “a floating island of garbage” and made lewd sexual jokes about Latinos in America.

The comments have brought sharp criticism from leadership around New Jersey, including state Assemblywoman Yvonne Lopez, who is Puerto Rican and called the comments racist and unacceptable. Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin also denounced the rhetoric.
