Improvements are coming to five NJ Transit stations, including Newark Penn Station, after a settlement between the transit agency and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey. A 2017 survey found hundreds of violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act, including more than 40 at Newark Penn Station.
In response to the settlement, NJ Transit issued a statement: “When DOJ contacted NJ TRANSIT in early 2021 with ADA deficiencies, we moved quickly to implement remedies and add repairs to our capital improvement plans … Approximately half of the issues have been remediated, and the remaining are either underway or in planning & design.”
But advocates say there’s a long way to go to make New Jersey’s train stations fully accessible for people with disabilities.
