NJ mayors have expressed worries about all the moves

Multiple New Jersey communities in recent days have reported that buses carrying migrants from Texas are rerouting to the Garden State, after a recent executive order in New York City that placed restrictions on buses traveling straight to the city.

For now, the migrants have been passing through, hopping on to NJ Transit trains to finish their journey to New York, officials said. But several New Jersey mayors nevertheless have expressed worries about all the moves and the impact on their communities.

Fanwood in Union County has been one of the stops.

“Assuming that these passengers were indeed migrants from Texas, I find it absolutely deplorable that they are being shuffled around like cattle,” said Fanwood Mayor Colleen Fahr in a statement. “This is a humanitarian crisis in which the governors of all affected states, the White House and Congress need to come together to find a solution.”

Local leaders and immigration activists all said the federal government ultimately needs to tackle immigration reform.
