By this time next year a new class of New Jersey State Police troopers will be on the job, one of two new classes being planned to bolster the State Police force by 2023. Gov. Phil Murphy on Monday said the additional recruits will help the agency meet critical law enforcement and emergency management needs — a role that’s grown in its demands since the start of the pandemic and more frequent tropical storms and other severe weather.
The announcement comes as over 100 enlisted state troopers will become eligible for retirement by October 2022 and more than 100 additional troopers will be eligible the following year. The new State Police classes are being funded with federal money set aside under the American Rescue Plan and state funds.
