This special edition of NJ Spotlight News with Briana Vannozzi marks a grim anniversary: one year since Princeton native and Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich was arrested while on assignment in Russia and accused of being a spy. He has been held ever since. It’s a charge that he, the Journal and the U.S. government vehemently deny.

To mark this one-year since his arrest, NJ Spotlight News took a deeper look at the “Free Evan” movement and spoke with fellow journalists, officials, family and friends.

Gershkovich is the first American journalist to be detained by Russian authorities since the Cold War. The 32-year-old was accredited by Russia’s Foreign Ministry to work as a reporter for the Journal’s Moscow bureau at the time he was taken into custody. The U.S. Department of State immediately declared it a “wrongful detention” and has demanded his release.

In the 365 days since, Gershkovich been held in the infamous Lefortovo, a Stalin-era prison in Moscow, and pre-trial detention has been extended several times. The most recent extension was handed down this week, until at least June 30. If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in a Russian prison.
