Despite being closed for decades, a former landfill at the Jersey Shore has been hit with a nearly $300,000 fine amid pollution claims.
State environmental regulators issued the fine to the owners of the Aeromarine property in Keyport following recent inspections. The violations found included the improper closure of the landfill and lack of control over access.
The Keyport site, which once was an airplane hangar, has a history of environmental issues. The site was repurposed as an industrial park for various businesses, including an auto mechanic and landscaping companies. Over the years, the site’s owner has been criticized for not taking sufficient measures to prevent illegal dumping.
The site is located near where the Baykeeper discovered what appeared to be chunks of lead illegally dumped on a public beach this summer. Aeromarine is not directly linked to that material. However, a state geologist stated earlier this month that the lead might have been naturally occurring.
The Department of Environmental Agency issued the $297,000 fine on July 22, and the property owners have requested a hearing.
