More than 1.1 million people from New Jersey applied for President Joe Biden’s student loan forgiveness program, according to a report by Politico. The highest percent per capita came from majority nonwhite and lower-income neighborhoods. Hudson and Gloucester counties had towns with the largest number of applicants.

New Jersey residents owe more than $43 billion in federal student loans, the 12th highest loan burden in the country, according to federal data. But it’s unclear whether any of those borrowers will ever have their debt wiped clean. The program remains in limbo — tied up in legal challenges in the U.S. Supreme Court four months after being launched. Oral arguments are slated for later this month with a decision expected in June.
