With just three weeks until Election Day, former President Barack Obama is jumping into the governor’s race by endorsing Democrat Mikie Sherrill. In the 30 second video, Obama praises Sherrill as a “mom who’ll drive down costs and keep communities safe,” adding, “Mikie’s integrity, grit and commitment to service are what we need right now, so go vote by November 4th.”

The high-profile backing comes after Republican candidate Jack Ciattarelli received endorsements from major players in the GOP, including President Donald Trump.

Meanwhile, new polling shows Sherrill maintains a single-digit lead in what’s been a tightening race. The latest Fairleigh Dickinson University survey shows Sherrill holds a seven-point lead, 52% to 45%, with just 3% of voters saying they’re still undecided. It’s a race that’s being closely watched nationwide as an early referendum on Trump’s second term and a potential signal of the greater political mood heading into next year’s midterm elections.

A Fox News poll shows a narrower edge for Sherrill, 50% to 45 %. Both are consistent with past surveys, but suggest Sherrill’s advantage is tightening as Election Day approaches.
