Gov. Murphy indicated he’s not yet on board with ending ban on self-serve gas

The rising price of crude oil is forcing New Jersey drivers to pay more for gas. According to AAA, the average price for regular gas in the state is now $3.89 per gallon, an increase of 26 cents in the last week, 45 cents in the last month, and more than a dollar higher than this time last year.

Industry advocates believe reversing a decades-old ban on New Jersey drivers pumping their own gas could lower costs. State lawmakers introduced a bill this week proposing the measure, but Gov. Phil Murphy indicated he’s not yet on board. “I’m not necessarily signing up for that because I need to understand more broadly what impact it’ll have on that but we’re committed to finding any way we can — in light of this war of choice by the thug Putin — to making this state more affordable,” Murphy said.
