New Jersey’s court system is preparing for an onslaught of pandemic eviction cases. About 200,000 new filings are expected by the end of this year, according to a new report released by a special committee at the state Supreme Court. Currently 50,000 cases are pending.

According to the report, both tenants and landlords are at financial risk once the governor lifts the pandemic-related moratorium on residential evictions. To prepare for this, the committee wants the state to hire and train legal specialists, connect renters with financial help, and create a streamlined process to settle cases. Eighteen recommendations are outlined in the 69-page report.
