The state attorney general’s office is joining the investigation into last Friday’s death of an inmate at the Essex County Correctional Facility. Authorities haven’t released details on what happened, the name of the inmate or how he died. The AG’s office says it’s investigating the conduct of correctional officers and other jail staff, and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the conduct of any other parties that may be responsible.

The inmate’s death comes after an incident in September, in which a group of inmates nearly beat another inmate to death in the jail. The victim of that beating, which was captured on video, remains hospitalized in a coma.
