New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal is stepping down. On July 26, he is to join the Securities and Exchange Commission as director of the division of enforcement, in charge of protecting investors and prosecuting bad actors in the markets.
Grewal is New Jersey’s longest-serving attorney general in 25 years; he began under Gov. Phil Murphy in 2018. He has been instrumental in pushing police reform and accountability, tougher gun-control measures and he jointly sued the Trump administration more than 70 times. Grewal is the first Sikh American in the nation to serve as a state attorney general.
